The Darien Library maintains a genealogical collection by a sign that reads "Genealogy" in the far right hand corner of the Research Room on the second floor. Included in this collection are books of The Middlesex Genealogical Society with the Call Number "MGS."
The MGS Librarian is Charles Scribner. In 2016, he updated his inventory of the combined holdings of MGS and the Darien Library: 2016 Inventory.
MGS has been in the process of removing many of our books from the genealogy collection at the request of the Darien Library to make the collection more relevant in an age when many of the books are available either online and/or in other CT research libraries. This also allows the library to add new genealogy books to the collection to replace many that were rarely referenced, did not fit their geographical guidelines, or were in poor condition. In the interim, MGS would like to share this Library Inventory for your review. The books highlighted in yellow represent those that the Darien Library has requested to retain and manage within their genealogy collection, while all others will be removed and placed in storage for MGS. Please contact us if there are any books on this listing that you are interested in as MGS can assist you by identifying if the book is located in another CT library or possibly available online in a digitized format. When we return from our summer break in September, a decision will be made on what to do with the books that have been placed into temporary storage at the library. Some possibilities include a future book sale and/or donations to other repositories; however, we welcome any additional suggestions. Please send all inquiries and questions regarding this update to email@example.com
The Darien Library has a number of on-line genealogical resources in addition to its book collection: Genealogy Resources of the Darien Library, including
The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has genealogical records from all over the world. Go to Discover Your Family History to search for records. Some records are available online, while others are available only on films and fiche that can be ordered and delivered to a local affiliate. The Darien Library is licensed to receive film and fiche you order from LDS, and it has equipment for reading and printing. To order films and fiche, go to Online Film Ordering, where you can order the film, pay for it, and have it delivered to the Darien Library.
The Darien Library has a subscription to American Ancestors magazine in the Genealogy section. It is published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society four times a year.
Volunteers are available, by appointment, to help with research problems, or just to get you started.
